Ya, that's tough. My two bigger dogs sleep downstairs, but they're really different than Alice (not as "needy" lol), she sleeps in a crate but in my bedroom (I moved it to the other side of the bed last night so she'd be closer to the open window since it was really stuffy in my room from the hot day, and she wined for a second until I reasured her that I was still there).

Putting something that smells like you in the crate with them is a great idea, but other than that, you're just going to have to ignore them and they should get used to it within a few days.

If you're working on it at home, try moving the kennel a little further away from your bed each night, then outside the doorway to your room, then down the hallway etc.
