According to the AKC Yorkshire standards:
Ears are small, V-shaped, carried erect and set not too far apart.

I see a lot of Yorkies with large ears - mine is no exception - but trimming mine certainly made them look smaller - which is a good thing!
I would suspect that your Yorkie's ears are near perfect. And, as you mentioned, if you let the hair grow out - they'll appear bigger, but will still be a nice size.
***** I have a friend who said she's afraid to take her Yorkie outside - because if he starts flapping his ears, she's afraid he take wing and fly off.
