I think I may be one of the few people who will tell you to leave it alone. To make a long story short, I brung a second dog home after my SO said one is enough and it was stressful on the relationship. He opted not to help with the animals anymore and it just went from bad to worse. If he's said one is enough and doesn't seem like he's budging, I wouldn't press the issue.

I do understand where you are coming from with animal companionship etc but it's not worth arguing/fussing with your hubby over it.
