The only solution is to just put him in the other room and deal with the crying/ howling for how ever long it takes for him to realize you are not coming- it may take many nights but eventually he will stop.

However, I guess I just don't understand why he can't be penned in your room, I understand that some people don't like dogs in their bed, but if he is sad/ lonely at night and just wants to be in the same room as you- it is really sad that he can't be.
