I had a friend years ago - whose son lost one of his permanent teeth on the playground. She picked it up, washed it off, and put it back in his mouth. She had him be very very very careful with it for a while - and it reattached itself.

That was a long time ago - and now dentists often replace teeth knowing that they will reattach. (The root actually develops new bone growth in this process.)

Knowing this to be the case with people - (and your dog's tooth hasn't come out) -- I would advise leaving it alone and keeping your dog from being rough with it for as long as possible. No chew toys, feed only soft food, liquids, etc. The loose tooth may reattach itself and he'll not have to lose it. I know it's hard to keep a dog from chewing - but do the best you can.
