When the momma dog is whelping sometimes for some reason or the other she may have trouble cutting the cord. Sometimes while she is doing the chewing and pulling she may pull to hard and rip the cord out of the pups belly, in turn ripping open the stomach. The momma dog may not realize that she is now consuming the intestins! Some momma dogs will push the pup away once she realizes something is wrong but others may just go ahead and consume the pup. This is the reason why all the pups that we have whelped (after I witnessed this) "I" cut the cord for her! Just safer. You have to be present the WHOLE time during the whelping. They can have a pup quicker than anything and have it cleaned up before you know it. Be looking at the momma, turn your back, turn back and there is a pup all cleaned up!

Hope you find answers soon!
It happens with yorkies, but a rarity. This is one of the reasons whelps with yorkies should be assisted. It could have happened but, not with two pups.

I don't think the OP confined this female and there are other dogs in the house....
