Maybe you could get a taser -- I think that is what they are called -- it has an electoral current -- some people have them for protection. I got one for each of my girls to carry when they are traveling, you can't have them in carry on for flights but you can pack them.
Anyway.. would not use on a dog but the click electrical sound would drive a dog off and give you a minute to protect you little one if needed.
