I'm sorry you had to deal with such an insensitive comment from someone who should feel very differently. Unfortunately, many people feel that way and just don't understand how much we love our furbabies.
After Lulu's luxating patella surgery I has someone (an acquantance, not really a friend) say that if she was theirs he would've "treated" her with a bullet. Really?
He had just had knee surgery himself to repair an ACL and I said perhaps the doctors should have given you that same "treatment". What's the difference?
