Asking your vet for a recommendation seems like a great idea.

I went through one not-so-good vet before I found mine now....It's scary trusting your baby to someone you don't know. I talked to the head animal control officer at the local shelter, whom I knew to be a dog owner and lover, and asked her what her experiences were at some of the area vets. She gave my current vet a good review and then after reading all completely positive reviews on the local yahoo yellow pages, I gave them a try and they are the best...and a bonus is that they also the cheapest around! Everyone I've now spoken to since, who takes their pet there, loves the clinic.
