I am against any type of shock device. I met a guy in the park who had one on each of his yorkies. They barked and squealed, barked and squealed, ad nauseum. I hate hearing a dog cry out like that, and clearly the collar was not modifying their behavior. This guy expected the collar to magically make his dogs behave, rather than actually working with them and teaching them what he wanted.
OP, did you try other methods, like pennies in a can, or teaching "Quiet"?
I haven't seen a vibrating collar, but that sounds more humane.
