Puppy food is not necessary, especially for small breeds. Larger breed dogs require food with the right cal/phos ratio. Any food that is labeled for all life stages is appropriate.
However, puppies should probably be kept on the same food the breeder is feeding until the pup is settled very well in a new home, especially pups that are smaller.
