When I first got Buster we had a number of medical issues to deal with between the fear for Buster's health/life and the expenses I was emotionally overwhelmed as well. But as another poster said I think I bonded with him even more being his nurse and caretaker. All of us switch between being companion and caretaker in our lives. You sweet stinky pup will be a great companion down the road. I know it must be hard to be close if you are repelled by the smell.
