Jackson had free roam at about 5 1/2 months old (except the upstairs was blocked off but the downstairs is big). I was really consistent and strict with him for the first 5-6 weeks of having him. I did do crate training in the beginning but he never spent a lot of time in it because I was lucky to be home alone when I first got him. So I'd bring him outside first thing in the morning and if he did not go pee/poop, he'd go back in the crate for 10ish more minutes. Then we'd try again. After he went pee AND poop, we'd have our playtime in the morning in a small confined area (like the kitchen) and he'd eat and play for 30 minutes. I'd always take him out 10 minutes after eating/drinking as a pup. Basically, I did not set him up to fail. I'd take him outside even if I didn't think he had to go so that he did not have a chance to have an accident. This went on throughout the day and if I was not home, he'd stay in the crate.

Great advice! Remy has also had free roam since about 6 months. Schedule consistency is an absolute key
Total Off topic - Brit - saw your avatar. I have the same life jacket for Remy but when I put it on him he "tips" forward and his head gets submerged in the water and it promotes drowning (joking of course). But I had to take it off him. It seems like it changes his balance some how, and makes him front-heavy. I don't get it. Its a size small (I tried the XSM and it was too tight) so I think its the right size. Jackson looks like he uses it properly. Am I the idiot, or is Remy a poor swimmer??
