First off I am so sorry for your granddaughters loss!!! Cats are such loyal companions and I know she must be heartbroken. And poor Spooky!

On this, you can't necessarily blame the pit wholely. What idiot owner let the pit run loose and not in a fences yard as ALL dogs should be? I have a pit mix and I'll have it be known Bouncer's (my yorkie) BEST FRIEND is a PUREBRED pit bull that ALSO LIVES WITH FOUR CATS. You can't expect every dog to love cats b/c they aren't all brought up that way like some of us bring ours up. And shame on that owner for not abiding by good owner rules and having a fenced in yard for that baby. Why is it that Pits get all the bad press but whenever another dog does something no one days a thing? I've never had one pit try anything with me at a groom shop but Cocker Spaniels and Yorkies (yes, yorkies haha) bite the sh*t out of me all day long. I don't know...I don't agree with shooting a animal for something that it doesn't reallize is wrong. To me, that's just wrong. Not all babies are trained and raised the way others are. But that's my spill and I'm done.
Bouncer and I will keep Spooky and your granddaughter in our prayers! You should let her know Spooky will be watching her from kitty heaven for the rest of her life just like he always did on Earth.
