I would not split heartworm either. I couldn't get my dogs to eat a whole heartguard, so I use interceptor, it is just a small pill and they happily eat the whole thing.
The easiest way I have found to put weight on is with more calorie dense food- when I was trying to put weight on Armani I couldn't feed enough kibble. I started adding canned food or homemade stew (shredded chicken, carrots, and sweet potatoes mixed with homemade chicken broth).
