I don't know of any downsides to microchipping. Levi is microchipped and it does give me a little more peace of mind. His brand (resQ/petlink) came with a one-time fee, no annual charges or anything. Luckily, we've never had to actually use it, but I have asked the vet to scan it and make sure it works.
