The way the equation is written in a line is what makes everyone get different answers, because most people will just assume that everything after the division sign is the denominator. The 2 in front of the parantheses is not PART of the parentheses, but can be written that way to show multiplication. Multiplication and division are equal, and are carried out left to right.
