Furgie does both...she is 8 months and I think we are really really close to being trained. Why don't you try the pee pads instead of newspaper? I would think it would absorb better and make less of a mess...they also come with a scent only detectable to the dog that encourages them to potty there. For us it was alot of positive encouragement...I would watch for when she had to potty and when she gave the sutle signs I would then put her on the pad and say go potty...it has been a process, I was about to give up on the pad, she prefers to go outside, but if I don't let her out in time, she ususally will go on the pad....it is alot of work! good luck!!!
