the hair inside the ears should be pulled out. It's not as bad as it seems and they have the powder to dry out the ears and makes it easier to pull out.

Moisture can get down there and cause yeast infections, etc. If you notice a nasty odor in the ears, you need to take them to the vet. Could be mites or an infection.
