Would you explain to the layperson, the purpose in showing? I'm assuming its to get an objective perspective of how close your dog is to standard. It seems to require a huge investment of time & money. Is it like a beauty pagent in that the winner's are awarded prizes in addition to the recognition of being well put together? With the hours required it seems like it would become your fulltime job.
Handling classes and grooming products, training, physical conditioning and nutrition do take money. However, on top of that you'll have traveling expenses, and entry fees....not to mention equipment.

The purpose of Showing per the AKC is to obtain approval of your breeding stock..

And yes, it is a full time job....handling, presentation of a dog.. requires hours a day..

Winners are awarded points towards their championship.....ribbons in conjuction with their placement....Trophies if at a specialty.
