So sorry; I know exactly how you feel. The puppy we initially picked out turned out to be very ill with liver shunt. According to the breeder, the vet recommended she be put down due to her failure to grow and thrive with numerous UTI's. So, she had the dog put down prior to us ever having picked her up.
And, I have no idea if she took the proper action or not. I chose another littermate (against the advice of many on here) and she has mild liver issues as well - but not life-threatening. We love her dearly and have no regrets even though she is not completely without health issues.
We were so sad and questioned our decisions as well and fate - was it meant to be or not?
Turns out it was - but I had many second thoughts. I won't comment on whether or not either should have been euthanized because I just don't know what the Vet had to say.
Go with your instinct. If you are having doubts ~ don't discount them.
Good Luck and don't despair ~ that special puppy will find you!
