There are a few people out there who do say that kissing faces is a manuever by the dog to put himself on your level (and therefore increase his own status). These are generally the same people who recommend alpha-rolling a dog to show him who is boss.

The majority of behaviorists now say that face-licking is an appeasement behavior by dogs - ie he's showing you that he knows you are boss. This is what I believe. If you watch, it is usually puppies and submissive dogs who lick the faces (especially around the mouth) of bigger/older dogs.

Whatever it is, I admit it! I'm an addict. I find it very relaxing when Joey licks my chin. I just love it!
