Gosh, if you can do all that, you should be able to pop a bow with bands on top!
@OP, Beamer's Mom brings up a good point. If you want a topknot, you have to make it first with bands, then just clip the bow (barrette) underneath or pop a bow with bands on top. The bands on bows are for placement only, not to be doubled, twisted, etc.
You should never try to make a topknot with a barrette as they are too small to hold much hair. You can pop them apart if you do. They should just be clipped on as an accent.
Practice makes perfect. Experiment with a few different backings and see what works best for you.
