This thread reminds me of when I was in school (and that is going back over 50 years OUCH!). This was back in England.
Used to be a health inspector that made home visits. I can "see" her now, tall, rather gaunt with an "inspector" hat on and a briefcase in her hand.
When we saw her in the street we used to say "There goes "Nitty Nora", the bug explorer. (Nits being head lice of course).
I remember when there was a break out of nits in school, every night my mother would sit me and my sister down at her feet and she would sit in her chair and comb our hair with a very fine comb to make sure we didn't have any.
Memories!! I haven't thought of "Nitty Nora" in years!
