To make sure it is the best fit for you & the pup, find a breeder or rescue that you can trust. One that will answer ALL of your questions without hesitation, will provide you with health & breeding history and provides you with a good health contract (in the case of a sale). You might check with YTCA.org -- there is a breeder referral page there that will show breeders in your state. Some may ask more than you would normally like to pay, but you will get a GREAT health guarantee, know that your pup is well-bred and free from genetic and acquired conditions. Saves money in the long run, knowing you are starting with a healthy, well bred dog!
All puppies look adorable but some do not even grow up to look like the yorkie we all have in mind when we pick out a pup. So, pick a breeder first and then look at their puppies! |
There are no YTCA breeders in Rhode Island, but there are several in Massachusetts and Connecticut. I spoke to several of them when we were looking for a dog two years ago. If I were buying another today, however, I would be looking to buy from a YTCA member who was an active show breeder who not only was on the cutting edge of issues facing the yorkshire terrier and taking active steps to reduce the indicence of disease and faults within the breed, but someone that would forge a long standing relationship with me and my dog. I would be looking for a very special type of breeder and I would travel to other places to find that person next time.
