I'm so sorry this had to happen. Dogs much smaller than 5 pounds are spayed every day however. I was very nervous as well (Sugar is only 3 pounds) My vet assured me that just the day before she spayed a 1.8 pound cat
A 15 pound father's pups could very well be life threatening.....
