It's the puncture wounds that are so dangerous. They have a small opening (like from a nail), and have a tendancy to heal the opening before all the nasties can be bled or pushed out by the body. It's good practice to squeeze & make puncture wounds bleed to flush out whatever might have been on the tip of the nail, needle, etc.
