Taking in another dog...older or younger will always entail more financial commitment. But not all older rescue dogs have major health issues, any more than all young puppies are going to be "healthy". I bought my first dog through a reputable breeder, and she has been the reason I've learned so much about dog nutrition, and holistic vet care. My rescue dog, has so far (fingers crossed) not been any additional vet cost (outside routines of course). If you can afford to feed a good healthy diet and provide preventative health care, you can probably afford to add another dog to your pack. I commend you for thinking about it before following your heart to the nearest rescue!! Good luck with your decision...I'll be looking forward to hearing about your new baby if and when you decide to get one.
