The teeth that are pulled are usually baby teeth that didn't fall out. Rather than running the risk of them not falling out on their own and having to go under anesthesia a second time, most vets pull them during spay/neuter. The teeth have to come out to prevent problems with adult teeth and increased risk of tartar forming.
It is very common.
