I don't know if it will work for you but I used a playpen.. either an used child one or a small play yard. I find that they are less expensive if you buy ones for children then for pets. Anyway... I put a pad, water and a sleeping/play area. I used the crate for the sleeping area inside of the play yard.
I feel it is important that young pups have water and even food if you are not home to feed mid day.
