You got lots of good advice from your mom and in this thread. Dogs are fertile all their lives, so it's not something they outgrow like humans. To be safe and to help prevent certain cancers, spaying and neutering is the best way to go, in my opinion. Also, you might want to have the vet check and see if she has any retained baby teeth, yorkies don't always lose their baby teeth on their own, and the best time to do it is during a spay or neuter since they are out anyway.
