This might be tough in your househould with so many, but the best way to avoid this is to keep the pads (whatever kind you use) in the same exact locations. I have area carpets, carpet runners, and throw rugs all over my house and the dogs use only their pee pads. If that doesn't work, you can put the pad inside something like a tray or a litterbox so the dog has a defined area. They do think the whole world is their toilet unless trained otherwise and I've had great success with training using exact locations. Even Teddy Bumpkins now nows where the bathrooms are and he beats to his own drum so it's a miracle of sorts with him!
