My Yorkies struggle with this same problem. The one that I am most concerned about thou is our male who has recently been neutered and all of a sudden blew up like a Parade Float..... (yes.. His ribs are sunk in under fat) Probably didn't help letting them free feed. They have all been on a portion diet for four months now with no results !

My Doc says that being neutered, lack of exercise during the winter, his age and lack of motivation all are factors that are against him. Plus they lose weight slowly! I cant let them in the main yard to run/get much needed exercise until they have received there Lepo vac. due next month. Hoping for some good results after some well needed exercise. (I could stand losing a few lbs myself for the same reasons) I feed them Pedigree and I found that they offer a diet meal.

But I wonder do diet meals work ?
Is your pup getting enough exercise?
