I am not sure of benefits to whelping mom so I will let the experienced ones handle that but members on here have told me that it would help guard my puppy against low blood sugar, especially if he isn't eating well so I am keeping it on hand in case it is needed. I bought mine at Petsmart for 8.99 so it was cheap, I also saw it at Petco for about the same price.
