I do free feed but I haven't tried treating before the walk to see if it is just a "yummy, treat" deal to him. I have never had a dog show any interest in them before so I was curious as to whether it was a good, bad, or indifferent situation.
We are working on training. Satchmo is only a year old and hasn't been with us only since last summer, and we had a lot of untraining to do. He had never been outside at all (and he was 5 mo when we got him). "Drop" is not his favorite word and he isn't consistant with it yet. I will have to purpose to keep him from nibbling while "on the go"
