She should have a baby doll face, preferably black and tan or darker blue and tan, mature at about 4 pounds. Our last yorkie (put down just this past Satruday) had several genetic health issues and we are determined to avoid this time around. We want to hear about breeders who only breed from healthy, perhaps champion, stock and focus only on yorkies and maybe also breed maltese, although that is not the breed we want to purchase. We would really appreciate your input. |
Hi there, I'd like to give you some information to help you in your search.
- 4lbs actually isn't a tiny size for a yorkie, it is actually within the standard range 4-7lbs, I would recommend if you are trying to avoid health problems that you look for something at least 4lbs, because when you start looking for a breeder that purposely breeds smaller than standard dogs, you may see more health issues. There are of course exceptions to this rule, but in general the bigger the pup the healthier. You want to ask about the size of the mother, she should be at least 5lbs, because any smaller and you start seeing delivery problems. I also caution you from looking for a breeder that advertises "teacups" as this is a breeder made term to try and make more money.
-Look for a breeder who shows, if they do not compete there is no way to know if they have quality dogs. This means the price may be higher, but at the end of the day the dog will be far healthier.
I'm not located any where near you, but this site provides great resources, so I hope you are able to find a great breeder in your location. Whatever you do, do not rush into a purchase without doing some research. Many reputable breeders are on this site, or members have purchased from them, if you are questioning whether it is a good breeder, do not hesitate to ask.
Good luck!
