I have seen on "It's the dog or me" the trainer there comes in and will teach the owners to clicker train with even the older dogs. I have been working on clicker training Hercules but he doesn't get it yet. I think it is probably better effective on older dogs, like a few months old or older. I will continue to click when I catch him doing good, especially while potty training,
