I'm always talking about this:
We have a couple decks and the upper one that leads out of the kitchen is 12x12, we put in a doggie door that goes straight into a "doggie outhouse" (lined with potty pads (opens on top for cleaning) - also the top has a cut out with plexiglass for light...the "outhouse" has another door that leads to the deck (with a little screen door we can open or shut - depending on whether we want them to have access to the deck)
We enclosed the entire deck slats with chicken wire so they couldn't fall through. We also made sure to run the chicken wire under the deck so they couldn't slip under the slat rail. Thus the wire (stapled tightly on the outside of the slats) is about three feet high and they absolutely love running in and out, allows them fresh air and a sense of a little more freedom...we only give them access to the deck when we're home -due to (as I've said before) my paranoia someone might steal them.
