Probiotics are a great start, but using foods that are prebiotics and contain oligosaccharides, such as oatmeal, within their food provides the needed macromolecules that feed the colon's beneficial flora as well. This flora contributes to the increased immunity from pathogenic bacteria that try to establish a foothold within the GI tract. I use both, pro-and prebiotics with my two.
