I have the same problem with my shih tuz.. the vet said all it takes is one flea bite!!!!!!!!!!

Also, I have changed foods -- no corn! -- added the oils to the food and the Apple Cider Vinegar to the water and that helped. and I also put ACV in his bath rinse water.. clears up the hots spots really fast.

Now I am homecooking (thanks Sugarmama and 107Barney!) what a difference!!
The ear infections are gone, the eye goop is better and the itching has improved a lot.

With the approval of my vet I do give Sammy some Benedryl when he gets a flea bite.. it give him about 5 drops (a small medication dropper) and he is 15 lbs.
I have had shots from the vet and medications that help but I am trying very hard to control with food what I can..

Oh ... and the vet gives him an antibiotic shots to prevent infection when he gets the bites. The sad thing is I never see a flea.. and they are on preventives so how does he get bitten????
