Hi and welcome. Whichever dog food you eventually change to, make sure you do it gradually. Puppies cannot easily tolerate major changes to their diet. For the first few days you get your puppy home, make sure you give it the puppy food the breeder has it on. Do not make any changes for the first week - at least. By 12 weeks the puppy should be able to have just the dry dog food, but if it is really tiny you may want to moisten the dry dog food - a little bit with water. I always squirt a little honey in it and microwave it - just a bit to moisten it. Then eventually just go it dry.
When you do decide to make changes to dog food - do it in moderation. For the first day put in about 25% of the new dog food versus the old. Then lets say the third or fourth day go up to 50%. Then the fifth to sixth day do 75% until by the end of the week you are at 100%.
There should be a sticky on the health forum showing you the best dog foods to use.
Most people on here have suggested Orijen or Acana - but mine really never did too good on them. I go with the all life stages. My dogs are on Dogswell Nutrisca Lamb and Chickpea. I only give them dry - but that is my preference.
Good luck in your search. |
