Figured I'd update this thread, I did end up purchasing the expanding freestanding gate. My dog did not like it at first, so I had to buy the anti-chew spray to get him to leave it alone. Everything was going well for a few weeks until I started leaving through the back door. When I came home through the front door I found that my dog managed to get through the gate. Looks like he was able to squeeze his body through the gaps in the gate. He does this about once a month, it is not tight enough to get him stuck. I am going to end up putting up something between the holes so that it is impenetrable. I've had the gate for about 5-6 months now and I love it. I would advise against it for smaller dogs though.
