I have an older viking embroidery machine that I use as my main machine, then I have a basic brother machine that I use for fastening everything. I keep my finishing thread on it all the time so I don't have to keep re-threading my machine. I bought a brother serger last year and love it. I am still learning how to use that.

The Brother machine that I have is not the very basic model but the next one up from it, several stitches but not computerized. There was a really nice one above it that was computerized-t wasn't overly expensive and it looked like a good beginner machine. I would recommend something like that so it's not so basic and you will grow with it for the inital learning curve.

I also have an older Bernina that I found thru a friend who belongs to a quilt quild. The owner passed away and the husband was finally starting to clear things out. When I went to pick up the machine, he had 3 shopping bags of threads, feet and accessories plus a sewing table waiting for me. I have been practicing on this on and off.
