Sounds like a great plan, give her a little space and test her potty skills. Take her out to potty right before you leave, always praise for a good potty, and then gate her in her small area, one with an easy to clean floor in case of an accident. Then take her out to potty immediately when you return.

Yes, definitely put her open crate in the area that you leave her.
