My Jasper had only about 3 teeth left when he passed away at 12 years old. He had dentals and every time he did, he had to have teeth pulled because they were bad. But if they did not do dentals on him, he may have gotten infections and gotten really sick and maybe died.
It's difficult keeping yorkie teeth clean because they are so small. Many don't want you to put your fingers or implements in their mouths and will fight you like a wildcat if you try. Vets put them under and scrape the teeth and under the gumline, much like your dentist during a cleaning. If your vet said your pup needs a dental, it's likely you should get it done.
Good luck!
