I can relate! I don't crate, but my puppy is in a large playpen while I'm at work. So, when I'm not at work, I take her everywhere with me. I invested in a purse carrier and she hops in & goes wherever I go.
My son was home on spring break last week & looked at me like I was a crazy person when I put my pup in her purse to take her shopping with us. By his third day home, he was putting her in the purse so she could go to the movies with us
Could you try taking your pup places with you? It gets them used to the car too & makes them great lil travelers.
