I would suggest to start slowly. Have him in an expen or gate off he kitchen (puppy proof it first). If he does well there, give him access to one more room, then another, until he earns free roam of your house. Also, if he's being destructive, tire him out before you leave the house. A bored dog is a naughty dog. You can also try giving him something to work on while you're out, like a kong.
