He'll be okay for a couple hours. I think their heartbreaking barks are harder on us. When all is said and done, give him lots of love - show him you didn't abandon him "forever" - he'll be more accepting each time when he knows you always come back to him.
I'm a fine one to talk though as I give in wwaaaayyyy too easily to my Gracie...and she knows it...and she works it. The others find ways to entertain themselves if I'm not immediately available for them - they can accept sometimes "no" is the answer, but not Gracie. Often times she reminds me of that demanding little 3 year old you see at the store where while you're walking away you're muttering, "If that was MY child..."
