Typically not a good idea, but if the 80 year old has a good support system and is in great health, mobile, it can work. My grandmother was very active at 80 when she brought home her last tiny poodle. However, she had my aunt very close by to help and take the dog if necessary. Grandma outlived the poodle, who lived a long, healthy life.
