yes, it does need to be the MOM who teaches. at least most of the time.. even though the owner doesn't probably want her to be gone that long, maybe you can work something out so the baby can go home with the mom for a while.. maybe alternate days even. it is VERY important that they stay with Mom long enough to learn the proper behaviours. yes, some breeders let them go early, but then we hear on this forum all the time "I got my puppy at 6 week, or 8 weeks and how can I stop it from biting?"
Having said that.. I have one that the grandma is actually the one who took over teaching. When Mom decided she was done.. she was done and was happy to let grandma take over.. of course now him and grandma are inseperable
